Musical Arts

At Lamar School, all elementary students participate in music classes designed to give each child a strong foundation of skills while nurturing a lifelong love of music. Each year builds upon the last, incorporating movement to the beat, healthy vocal technique, music-reading development, exploration of influential composers and historical figures, and instrument identification. Students play a variety of small instruments, strengthening listening skills as they explore rhythm, tempo, and ensemble performance. Our fifth graders learn to play the ukulele, developing chord skills, reading simple melodies, and performing together as an ensemble.
Music education opens doors that help children pass from school into the world around them – a world of work, culture, intellectual activity, and human involvement. The future of our nation depends on providing our children with a complete education that includes music.” – Gerald Ford
In grades 6–8, students participate in choir classes that strengthen rhythm, pitch accuracy, improvisation, dictation and music-reading skills while building confidence in vocal performance.
At the high school level, students advance into Raider Harmony, Lamar’s high school choir, where they refine their music literacy skills, vocal technique, expand their musical repertoire, and prepare for performances at concerts and school events. Through these experiences, students grow not only as musicians but also as confident leaders and collaborators within the Lamar community. Students will leave high school with the skills to audition for music scholarships at the college level, but more importantly, students will have the skills to be lifelong independent musicians.

Additional elementary music classes are also offered throughout the school year. Sign ups are the beginning of each fall and spring semester. Classes include:
- Ukulele lessons
- Piano lessons
- Guitar lessons
