Clubs & Activities

Students in grades 4th-8th participate in the annual Spelling Bee competition. Class bees are held at each grade level and these winners proceed to the school bee, where the winner at each grade level moves on to participate in the MAIS District Spelling Bee.  First place winners from the  District Bee earn the right to compete in the MAIS Overall Spelling Bee.  Lamar School is proud to have had winners named at the district and overall levels for many years.

Lamar School participated in several creative writing contests including the MAIS Writing Contest. These competitions allow our students to showcase the skills of writing narrative, informative, and persuasive essays along with poetry each year. Through these contests students can continue to develop and hone their skills in the creative writing process.

Lamar Elementary competes in the national Zaner-Bloser Handwriting contest each year with schools across our state and nation. Students in Kindergarten through second grade are judged on their print handwriting. Students in third through fifth grade are judged on their cursive writing. Students work daily to master print and cursive skills throughout the elementary years. Lamar School claims several state winners each year, and several students have also claimed national recognition throughout the years. 

Lamar School participates in the Mississippi Children’s Museum CSpire Coding Challenge each fall. During this competition students compete to program robots and complete problem solving challenges against schools across our area. Lamar School has claimed several awards during this event held at our local children’s museum each year.  

The Young Lawyers Division of the Mississippi Bar Association sponsors a High School Mock Trial competition each year. The competition is held at the Mississippi College School of Law in downtown Jackson. It is open to public school, private school, and home school students. Lamar enters two teams in the Jackson Regional competition. If teams advance to the State competition, they compete for two days at the Hinds County Courthouse in downtown Jackson. One team is chosen from the state competition to represent Mississippi in the National Competition in May. 

The Academic Quiz Bowl Team is an award-winning organization at Lamar School, having claimed several state championship titles as well as advancing to competitions at the national level over the years.  Students work daily to master topics such as chemistry, physics, geography, literature, algebra and all upper level mathematics, art and music appreciation, and pop culture.  Competitions are held throughout the year at various schools and universities. 

Raider Robotics is a dynamic and innovative high school robotics team at Lamar School.  Students work throughout the competition season to construct and program a robot designed to execute the annual task challenges of F.I.R.S.T. (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a competitive robotics league with local, state, and international competitions.  Through F.I.R.S.T., students are able to apply mathematics, science, and engineering design concepts learned in the classroom to find solutions for real world problems.   The program also brings the added value of teaching students the unique F.I.R.S.T. philosophy of “gracious professionalism” – a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community.

National Beta Club is the largest independent, non-profit, educational youth organization in America. For more than 80 years, it has prepared today’s students to be tomorrow’s leaders.

Lamar School’s Beta club is proud to recognize high school students who exemplify the credentials of character, leadership, and service. To be eligible for membership students must have an overall GPA of 90 or above with no grade below an 80.

The National Junior Beta Club was founded in 1934. Its purpose is to promote the ideals of character, service, and leadership among students, to reward meritorious achievement and to encourage and assist students in continuing their education after high school. Middle School students in 6th-8th grade earning a 90 or above combined GPA for Math, Science, English, Literature, and Social Studies, with no C’s, are deemed eligible for membership in the Lamar Middle School chapter of the National Junior Beta Club.

Mu Alpha Theta is a national mathematics honor society that was founded in 1957.  This organization is dedicated to promoting scholarship in mathematics and establishing math as an integral part of high school education.Membership at Lamar School  is extended to students who have completed Algebra II or a higher level math. Students must have an overall average of 90 or above in all math classes.

The National Junior Honor Society was founded in 1929. Five main purposes have guided chapters of NJHS from the beginning: to create enthusiasm for scholarship; to stimulate a desire to render service; to promote leadership; to encourage responsible citizenship; and to develop character in the students of secondary schools. These purposes also translate into the criteria used for membership selection in each local chapter. Rising 8th graders must have obtained a 93 or above overall grade average at the end of their 7th grade year to become a member. The criteria for membership also require outstanding performance in the areas of service, leadership. and character. Students are eligible to be tapped for membership in the fall of their 8th grade year.

The Lamar School Chapter of the National Honor Society was chartered in 1999. NHS members are charged with upholding the ideals of scholarship, character, service, and leadership. The membership is composed of juniors and seniors who have achieved an overall GPA of 93.

The Lamar School National Art Honor Society's purpose is to inspire and recognize those students who have shown outstanding ability in art, bring art to the school and community's attention, and further the members' creative skills and talents. 

The Spanish Honor Society was founded by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese in 1953 for North American secondary schools. The Lamar High School chapter was established in 2001. The title of our chapter is Sociedad de la Mancha. The chapter's motto is “All together.” The chapter's colors are red and gold. The chapter's  insignia and seal are those of the national association.

The Lamar School "Raider Rhythm Drum Line" is open to all middle and high schoolers. The drum line, playing cymbals, bass drums, snare drums, and tenor drums, performs at pep rallies and football games as well as other special events.   The drum line is an exceptional opportunity for students wanting to learn how to read music/play an instrument, and it also provides opportunities for student leadership. Experienced and newer members learn to collaborate while older students offer guidance by teaching younger students about their instruments. 

With a focus on teaching the whole child, Lamar provides instrumental lessons available on campus during and after school hours. Guitar, ukulele, and piano lessons are offered to allow students to explore a love of music and develop foundational skills for reading music, understanding music theory, and understanding instrumental music as an extracurricular activity.

Lamar School held their first ever Winter Production this past December. Students ranging from grades 9-12 performed Louisa May Alcott’s timeless American classic, Little Women. This production allowed students who are serious about the fine arts an additional opportunity to challenge themselves with intensive and collaborative theater.

In addition to the Winter Production, Lamar School puts on a musical in the Spring. The musical is open to all middle and high school students and is an excellent opportunity for any students interested in dancing, singing, acting, (or just wanting to try something new) to shine on stage with their talent.

Students in grades 1st-5th can participate in specialized art classes provided after school hours that focus in detail on developing artistic skills such as pottery, sculpting, painting, and mosaics. These students create works of art in small group settings with our elementary art teacher to inspire creativity and build on a foundation of art concepts.

Lamar School's Yearbook Staff produces Le Corsair each year featuring all students, Pre-K through 12th grade.  The yearbook is a comprehensive snapshot of the school year and is sold online throughout the year.

The Raider Review is Lamar School’s elementary newspaper. The Raider Review is developed, written, and published four times during the school year by the fourth and fifth grade newspaper staff with articles, comics, riddles, and more. Issues are always sold hot off the press to our elementary student body to enjoy the latest in elementary news. 

The Lamar Ledger is Lamar School's middle school newsletter. The Lamar Ledger is designed and written by the sixth grade creative writing class.

Postscript is an on-line student publication maintained by the Journalism class. Covering the Arts and Humanities on our campus, the website also includes literary submissions from students in all grades. 

Lamar School offers Chess Clubs at all levels. In Elementary, students are introduced to the game of chess along with strategies. Students compete with each other to practice their chess knowledge. In Middle School and High School, students practice weekly and participate in tournaments around the state.

To promote a healthy lifestyle and healthy habits, Lamar Elementary School participates in a morning walking club during the Fall and Spring semesters each year. Students are encouraged to walk and tally their total miles during the mileage club weeks. Throughout the 3 week intervals, students have logged up to 2,000 miles, developing a love of healthy habits.

Little Dribblers  is open to all Kindergarten students who wish to participate in this introduction to basketball. With a focus on dribbling foundation skills, this team of students work to create entertaining performances between Junior Varsity and Varsity games.  

Rowdy Raiders  is the Lamar lower grades basketball team that is open to all 3rd-6th grade students who wish to participate. With a focus on developing strong athletes, basketball foundational skills, and inspiring a love for competition, Rowdy Raiders teams compete and practice throughout the basketball season amongst their peers. 

Little Raider Rage is the Lamar Elementary dance team that is open to all 4th and 5th grade girls who wish to participate. With a focus on developing strong athletes, dance and cheer skills, and inspiring a love for performing, our Little Raider Rage team practices throughout the summer and fall athletic seasons. The team performs dances throughout the football season at JV and Varsity football games and pep rallies.

The Jane Austen Book Club is open to 9th-12th grade students who want to dig a little deeper into the Regency world of author Jane Austen.  The club chooses one Jane Austen novel to read each year, and the weekly lunchtime meetings are times for the students to discuss the novel and the time period represented. 

The mission of the club is to raise money through donations and fundraising. With this money, the club invests in stocks with the help of a local  financial advisor, Trey Hannah. The club observes the stock market over the school year and makes informed adjustments depending on how well the stocks are doing. At the end of the year, the club removes the money they have earned from the stocks and donates it to a non-profit organization. This year the club has decided to donate the money to the Blair Batson Children's Hospital.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is touching millions of lives…one heart at a time. Since 1954, FCA has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful platform of sport to reach every coach and every athlete with the transforming power of Jesus Christ. FCA focuses on serving local communities around the globe by engaging, equipping and empowering coaches and athletes to unite, inspire and change the world through the gospel. Our chapter of FCA meets weekly; athletes from grades 6-12 are invited to join our coaches and community guests as we embrace this powerful tool of living through Christ in all of our endeavors.

Student Council provides leadership opportunities for students at all grade levels. This is a vital organization on our campus.  Officers and grade representatives are elected by the student body each year at the elementary, middle, and high school level.  This group works with faculty sponsors to plan and carry out events such as Homecoming, Formals, and Prom.  

Part of Lamar School's mission is to prepare our students for a college education.  One of the first steps towards college entrance is taking the ACT or the SAT.   These tests give colleges and universities a measure of a student's college readiness.  Lamar School offers ACT Prep courses throughout the year to help sophomores, juniors, and seniors with strategies and test taking skills.  We celebrate with all of our students as they reach their target scores.  Those that make a 30 or above on the ACT join our 30+ Club.
