Sherry Purdy Acton (class of '90) and her family have built a deep, lasting bond with Lamar School, one that spans generations. Sherry’s journey with Lamar began when she started as a third grader, and it was at a Lamar JV football game that she met her future husband, Chad. As a parent of three children –– Nash, Branson ’17 and Austin ’23 ––who also attended Lamar, her connection to the school has only grown stronger. “I just get warm and fuzzies when I think about Lamar,” Sherry shared. “I had a great experience there, and my children did too.”
Sherry describes Lamar today as a well-rounded environment that shapes students in all aspects of life. “Lamar isn’t just about creating academically sound students," she said. “It’s about building character, enhancing academic skills, nurturing athletes, and fostering artists. The whole person is enriched at Lamar.”
Her children’s success in college is proof of Lamar’s impact. “Lamar is a college preparatory school, and my children were prepared for college,” Sherry said proudly. Recently, her son Austin, now a sophomore at Ole Miss, told her he feels more prepared for college than many of his friends from other high schools. “He’s sailing through college!” she said.
Sherry’s dedication to Lamar goes beyond her time as a student and parent. She is a consistent supporter of Lamar’s Annual Fund, which plays a crucial role in the school’s continued success. The fund provides for things like professional development, curricular resources, and playground equipment –– essential “extras” that tuition alone doesn’t cover. “The Annual Fund helps keep tuition costs manageable by covering all the things that go above and beyond,” Sherry explained.
She encourages all Lamar families to contribute to the Annual Fund, no matter the size of the gift. “I give a little bit each month,” Sherry said. “If everyone gave even a small amount regularly, it would really add up.”
