Getting to Know Coach Stacy Luker

When you talk with Coach Stacy Luker about a career that includes 259 wins, 13 region championships, seven state titles, and induction into the Alabama High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, he doesn't spend much time talking about trophies.

Instead, he talks about people.

“If 10 years down the road I see a kid that I’ve coached and he’s a good husband, father, employee, or business owner, then I think there’s been success there,” Luker said. “I still hear from 45-year-old men I coached who talk about the lessons they learned in our program. That means a lot to me.”

As Lamar prepares for a new season under his leadership, we sat down with Coach Luker to learn more about the man behind the whistle.

Rooted in Faith, Family, and Community

Coach Luker and his wife, Donna, are both from Sweet Water, Alabama, where they remain deeply connected to their church and community. The couple will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary this September and are proud parents of three sons and grandparents to nine grandchildren.

Football has become a family tradition. Two of Coach Luker’s sons are head football coaches, while another serves as an assistant coach and technology director.

“It’s kind of a family business,” he joked.

A deacon at Sweet Water Baptist Church, Coach Luker views coaching as more than a profession.

“This is a calling,” he said. “I feel like God stretches you into places you’re not expecting to be, and that excites me.”

Why Lamar?

Coach Luker said Lamar’s strong reputation and close-knit community immediately stood out during the hiring process.

“I knew there was a good history of athletics here,” he said. “All sports have been successful, boys and girls, and the leadership with Mrs. Ballou and Coach Boone was impressive.”

He was also drawn to the school’s commitment to student involvement.

“It’s unique to be in a place where more than 90 percent of the students are involved in athletics,” Luker said. “That’s not something I’ve ever been a part of.”

Most importantly, he believes Lamar provides an environment where students can excel both academically and athletically.

A Championship Philosophy

While Coach Luker’s résumé speaks for itself, his coaching philosophy remains grounded in simple principles: accountability, humility, hard work, and unselfishness.

“Accountability covers about all of it for me,” he said. “Sports teach you life lessons. You learn how to win humbly and lose humbly. You learn to work hard and be there for the guy next to you.”

On the field, he believes strong defense and a physical running game remain the foundation of successful football teams. Off the field, he hopes every player develops into a leader and a man of character.

As he begins his first season at Lamar, Coach Luker is focused on building a disciplined, competitive culture and helping the Raiders improve every week.

“Your goal every year is to win a state championship,” he said. “You don’t run from that. But you also want to see improvement every single week.”

He hopes Raider fans will see a team that plays hard, competes with discipline, and represents Lamar with pride.

Beyond Football

Away from the field, Coach Luker enjoys spending time with his family, especially trips to the beach with his children and grandchildren. During COVID, he taught himself how to play guitar and still enjoys playing today. He also sings in the choir at Sweet Water Baptist Church.

When asked what he hopes players will say about him years from now, his answer reflected the same values that have guided his career.

“I hope they’ll say he set a standard for men that we want to get to,” Luker said. “That he was fair, worked hard, and always treated us right.”

Lamar is excited about the future of Raider football under Coach Luker’s leadership, but perhaps even more importantly, about the example he will set for the young men he coaches each day.
