Teacher Spotlight: Mr. Caleb Thaggard

Lamar is excited to welcome Mr. Caleb Thaggard to the Upper School English Department! A Meridian native and Lamar kindergarten alum, Mr. Thaggard will be teaching English I, English III, and sharing AP Language with Mrs. Ransier.

After earning his bachelor's degree in history and master’s in secondary education from the University of Southern Mississippi, Mr. Thaggard began his teaching career inspired by a college professor who made a lasting impact. “I thought, ‘If I want more teachers like him in the world, maybe I should try to be one,’” he said. “I’m still trying to be as good as he was.”

Mr. Thaggard brings with him a blend of experience in both English and history, having taught at Kemper Academy and Hattiesburg High. He’s excited to return to the classroom this fall and especially eager to join the tight-knit community at Lamar—one he’s already familiar with through his work with Meridian Little Theatre and Lamar’s past productions.

In his classes, students can expect a balance of structure, creativity, and thought-provoking discussion. “I want them to realize they’re capable of developing their own original ideas,” he shared.

In 9th grade, his students will explore coming-of-age stories and begin building critical reading and analytical skills. English III will focus more on Socratic discussion and independent thought, while AP Language will stretch students to analyze current events, literature, and media—preparing them for college-level writing and rhetoric.

One of the works he’s most excited to teach is All Quiet on the Western Front, a novel that allows him to merge his love for history and literature. “It’s an opportunity to connect their knowledge of World War I with the emotional and human experience behind it,” he said.

Known for his thoughtful approach to tough topics and his ability to make reading engaging, Mr. Thaggard also brings a strong sense of humor and relatability to the classroom—something he attributes to being the oldest of 10 siblings!

Outside of school, he enjoys reading, traveling, working out, and trying new destinations during school breaks. His favorite novel? Ender’s Game—a sci-fi story that begins with military strategy but ends with a powerful reflection on empathy. It's also this year’s summer reading for 9th grade.

Welcome to Lamar, Mr. Thaggard!
